Tong
Tong Industries Co. made all kinds of interesting knockoffs.
They had some 8 and 9 inch variants. The plastics they used
were usually hard plastics. They did something that a few other
companies also did: they cloned other knockoff figures. For
example, they cloned the AHI Action
Apeman figures with their own 9 inch version. Johnny Muscle
was a rip-off of Mego's Johnnie Jackson which was a UK version
of Action Jackson. In any case, Tong made a lot of great figures
and the bodies had some additional twists and swiveling abilities
that no one else had.

Take
a good look at these figures, they are direct rip-offs of AHI's
Action Apemen series, which in turn were rip-offs of Mego's Planet
of the Apes line. Although the poseability is much better in the
Tong figures, the clothes, heads and accessories mimicked AHI's
line almost identically. Take a look at the comparison shots and
judge for yourself.

Johnny Muscle is quite a bulky lad! Sporting a super poseable body
(and very durable!) body for his time, this guy had his own line
of accessories and clothing. He followed the same idea as Mego's
Action Jackson (or Johnnie Jackson in the UK), and probably cost
quite a bit less. He came on a card (no bubble) in what can only
be described as a really bad leotard.

These generic Policemen and Firefighters are actually quite detailed and feature terrific packaging. The photos are courtesy Laurie Halbritter.

With
much appreciation I am able to present to you these Tong Indian
figures, courtesy of Len Starr. Len has to be the most avid Tong
Indian collector I ever met. These figures are very cool in their
look, poseability and clothing. I wish I had some!

I found this Tong Ninja. Took him apart
to display the extra articulation in the swivel bicep.

you catch that misspelling on the card?) Read further about the
wonderful attributes of this toy as listed on the card: "Will not
fall apart." WOW!!
What a PLUS when buying a toy!! Amazing the marketing talents of
these people!
